Some of the services Bio Dental Care offers

Check up and clean

The Australian Dental Association recommends a dental check-up and clean at least once every 6 months. For someone with higher risk of dental decay or disease, and those undergoing orthodontic treatment (braces or clear aligners), it becomes once every 3 months.

The regular repair and maintenance of your teeth and gum tissues are the most important and cost-effective method to keep your oral tissues in top condition. After all, you use your teeth at least 3 times a day, every day. Like your car service or mowing your lawn, it is much easier and more economic to treat the problem when early.

Once every 2 years, we take 2 small x-rays to check between the teeth for decay, an area we are unable to see. We may also take large scans like OPG or CBCT to check teeth roots for abscesses or other jaw pathologies.

For little ones, we recommend a proper dental visit from the age of 2. However, we recommend all parents to bring their children during their own appointment, to familiarise them to the environment and our staff members.

Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is far more complicated than the simple veneers and crowns.

It is usually what the patient requests first, but often what we discuss last. This is because any cosmetic work should be carried out on a firm and healthy foundation. Therefore, we always make sure the teeth and gum are healthy enough to be made over. You would never renovate your house if the foundation were infested with termites, would you.

Any cosmetic work should be tailored to each individual’s anatomy, age, and expectations. There are too many 18-year-old’s fridge-white veneers on 60-year-old teeth. We prefer, naturally beautifully teeth. We will discuss age-appropriate options that are anatomically harmonious to your oral tissues. We will never place the 18-year-old’s fridge-white veneers on you, unless you really want them. We will listen to our patients and give you the ones for a 25-year-old.

Oh, we can also do teeth straightening, teeth whitening, internal bleaching, crowns, and implants too.

General Dentistry

Bio Dental Care is a family practice, so we see patients from all walks of life.

We look after baby teeth to adult teeth, and we can even make you artificial teeth to replace the missing ones. From sports mouth guard to grinding night guard, we can also make you sleep guard to stop snoring.

Our experienced dentists and dental technicians will examine, diagnose, explain, and present all treatment options to discuss with you. You will be able to make the choice of the treatment you believe is most appropriate and comfortable for you.

With your consent, we are more than happy to discuss your treatment with a family member or whoever you would like to have a second opinion with. We will provide you all the information you need to make up your mind in your own time. After all, it’s your teeth and you are only happy to brush the ones you want to keep.

Children’s Dentistry

The first visit to the dentist is very special to the child, the parents and to us. Please inform us if this is your child’s first dental visit so we can make a special note on the appointment. We highly recommend you prepare the child for their visit by watching this episode of Peppa Pigg at the Dentist

Our friendly dentist will gently guide your little one through every little stop along the way using a tell-show-do technique. We will assess the readiness of each individual child as everyone is ready at difference pace. We will do as little of as much as the child is comfortable with. You are welcome to stay in the treatment room for the entire appointment.

We have seen too many times when the first dental visit for a child is for an emergency toothache. We then have no choice but to take the tooth out. It is not our preferred way to make the first dental impression on your little one. This “traumatic” experience often leads to long term dentophobia that can last a lifetime. This is how my older patients account their first dental visit to me. And they still remember it like yesterday.

Braces

Braces or orthodontic treatment is often used to correct imperfect bite and align crowded or crooked teeth. It has both functional and cosmetic significance.

At Bio Dental Care, we can offer your clear aligners or Invisalign® treatment. This type of treatment may not be suitable for everyone, so a proper treatment plan is always needed to assess whether it will work on you and the limitations. We will then offer you an obligation free appointment to discuss the treatment options, treatment time and treatment cost. You will have all the information you need to make an informed decision.

Believe or note, the retainers you will wear after the treatment is the most important part of the overall treatment. It takes our skills to straighten teeth, but we rely on you to keep them straight. Remember, the teeth will be moved into a straight position, but also an artificial position. They will always try to go back to their original position. Therefore, we rely on you wearing the retainers (removable or fixed) to keep them where you like them, every day.

Tooth Replacement

With advancing technology, we are now able to offer tooth replacement in many ways. From dentures to bridges, from implants to all on 4, there will always be one for you.

Missing teeth may not present a significant inconvenience to you at an early stage, nevertheless, over time this often leads to overloading of the remaining teeth, shortening their life expectancy, and tipping of the adjacent teeth/over-eruption of the opposing teeth.

Replacing teeth is like renovating a room in your house. It needs to provide functionality and harmonizing aesthetics. At Bio Dental Care, our experienced dentist will examine all your teeth, and take necessary x-rays/scans/moulds to comprehensive assess all the appropriate options of replacement.

You will then be presented different options of replacement available for your needs, and you can make your choice that you feel comfortable with.

Root canal treatment

Root canal treatment (RCT) is probably the most feared treatment in all disciplines of dentistry.

It is quite technical dentistry, but quite boring to the patient because it takes so long and so many appointments. It often takes 2-4 visits to complete and then another set of appointments to place the crown on top.

Root canal treatment is necessary when the decay or fracture has propagated into the nerve canals of the tooth, causing infection and often pain. It is also needed when the tooth develops an abscess. It is often diagnosed with pain and/or pus drainage and an x-ray/scan.

The treatment essentially is to clean and disinfect the nerve canals and place 2 different types of anti-bacterial medicament over 2-4 appointments. This is very similar to a baby plumbing work of cleaning tiny tubes inside the tooth and roots. Each tooth can have 1 or more canals, depending on the number of roots. Each root has at least 1 canal. The number of canals determines how difficult the case is, and hence the treatment cost.

The canals are eventually filled with a special root filling and the tooth is sealed with a crown to strengthen the tooth. If the crown is not placed, the tooth is likely to fracture in the future and it will need to be extracted.

Our dentist will discuss the treatment success rate, treatment time and treatment cost with you for you to decide on the best for you. The alternative to root canal treatment is often the removal of the tooth. If this is what you would prefer, then we are happy to discuss the different options of replacing the tooth as well.

Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth, also known as the 3rd Molars, are often the last set of 4 teeth to erupt into your mouth. Although most people have 4 wisdom teeth, it is not unusual to have less than or more than 4 wisdom teeth. They usually come up in your late teens or early 20s.

Whether you should have them removed or kept, depends on many different factors. They are often:
1. The position of your wisdom teeth. The impacted/misaligned ones often need to be removed.
2. Whether you can keep them clean. They are usually too far back for you to even reach them.
3. Pain or infection. They often cause pain/infection and must be moved.
4. Lack of space to accommodate them
5. Other treatment considerations such as braces.

At Bio Dental Care, we can offer you 3 types of anaesthetics:
1. Local Anaesthetics
2. Sedation
3. Hospital General Anaesthetics

We will discuss the pros and cons of each option with you and recommend the most appropriate treatment for you. We may also need to take a 2D and/or 3D scan to assess your wisdom teeth. Don’t worry, we will treat them wisely.

Tooth whitening

Tooth whitening is probably the most common dental cosmetic procedure in the world. Who wouldn’t want a set of white choppers?

According to the health regulations, the active ingredient for tooth whitening is categorized into commercial strength and professional strength. The commercial strength is up to 1% and can be used in any commercial products such as whitening toothpaste and whitening gels dispensed by anybody. The professional strength starts at 9% and can only be used or dispensed by a registered dental professional.

Your teeth must be checked, cleaned, and conditioned before any whitening. Whitening products used on unhealthy teeth can lead to significant damage. Like colouring your hair, the hair needs to be thoroughly cleaned first and only when there is no scalp problem.

We can offer you take home DIY whitening or in-chair fast whitening. There is no significant difference in the overall result, the only difference is whether you would like to save some money to do it yourself or pay the dentist to do it quicker for you.

Gum disease treatment

Gum disease, also known as “periodontal disease,” is one of the most prevalent dental infections in the world. It is often asymptomatic until it is too late.

The simplified way to understand gum disease is to compare it to a termite problem to the foundation of a house. The build of bacteria causes inflammation, bleeding, and recession of gums around teeth, often coupled with bad breath.

After examining your teeth and gum, we will be able to determine whether you have gum disease. If you do, we can then determine if it is mild, moderate, or advanced. The treatment required is different for each category and need to be tailored to each individual patient depending on the age and medical history.

Gum disease can also be seen with pregnancy, diabetes, and side-effect of certain medications. Appropriate early treatment and regular maintenance is the key to treat and prevent gum disease. After all, your teeth are only as strong as the gum and bones that support them.

Treatment under General Anaesthetic

Dr Mashen provides comprehensive dental treatment under General Anaesthetics through our affiliation with Waratah Private Hospital at Hurstville.
https://waratahprivate.com.au/doctor/dr-zhen-mashen-waratah

This type of treatment mode is ideal for patients who would like to “sleep through the procedure”. It has helped many of our patients to overcome their anxiety of dental treatment.

You will be required to attend a consultation appointment before “going under”, so we are able to examine your teeth and along with you, determine the treatment options. X-rays and scans are often needed and they can be taken at the time of consultation.

You may need some test with your GP to determine whether it is safe for you to have the general anaesthetics and the anaesthetist may contact you to discuss this in more details.

This can often be the treatment of choice for young patients when long treatment in a dental chair could be challenging. We have also treated quite a number of patients with special needs (physical/mental disability) with general aesthetics.
